The Double Pendulum Model is an easy to use, interactive EJS model for a system with two masses on one rod and two masses on another rod. The user can change the masses, the rod lengths, and the initial angles. The system is a Hamiltonian system so energy is conserved. The initial angles and velocities define the state of the system. As time progresses, the state of the system moves along the Poincare section defined by the initial conditions. After specifying the initial conditions, the model displays the state of the system as time evolves. This model can be used to examine the motion of a double pendulum.
Instructions:
Click on the “Run Model” button to simulate the system in the “EJS” modeler.
A button that looks like a red “X” will allow the user to modify the initial conditions of the system by changing the angles and the angular velocities.
By selecting the “Poincare” button, the Poincare section of the system will be displayed.
In order to examine the dynamics of the system, a button labeled “Explore” will display the state of the system on a plot.
Double Pendulum Model Features:
It is possible to modify the masses, rod lengths, and initial conditions.
Poincare plot can be viewed.
The plot can be zoomed in and out.
Poincare map can be viewed.
It is possible to export the results of a simulation.
It is possible to add more plots.
Runs/Exports:
Many different runs of the model can be saved by selecting the Save button at the top of the screen.

Creating a model in EJS

It is very simple to create a simulation in EJS. You can plot the model in the EJS GUI as follows:

If you need to modify the model, you can open the model in the EJS editor as follows:

By selecting a place in the plot, you can modify the initial conditions as follows:

To modify or add plots of the system, just right-click within the plot window and select “Open EJS Plot” from the pop-up menu. Once the plot is opened, you can manipulate the plot as you would any other plot.
