I print a copy for each student. I fold it in half so that it’s 9 x 6 inches and place it on top of the word list they’re to fold. If they want to practice the S and letters in their name, I put a 3 or 4 of them up. They fold and smooth the paper in half.
Next, we spell the word. They are really good about listening to their “word” and paying attention to phonics. When they get it right, they spell it again. I have my students identify the word first and then spell it. That’s an important phonetic skill because it’s often hard to find the sound for the beginning students.
I have them fold the word again into one long column of eight and when they’re finished, we spell it a 2nd time. Sometimes I touch it to make sure the letters look right (it’s hard to get them to look at the paper, so I only do it when I know they’ve spelled it correctly)
This year, we’re mixing things up a bit. Instead of having them watch my video, I present a new sort. We have our word list, but instead of spelling the word, we make sure they know the definition. I review the names of the kids from the word list and have them identify the ones on the board (this is practice for identifying their names in the noisy schoolroom).
