One thing struck me as particularly interesting is that, even though it is possible to consider in a finite way any one infinite domain (for example, we can consider the range of powers of 2 that are less than 4), it is not possible to consider all those domains simultaneously. Instead, we must consider them one-by-one.
With the logarithm, this doesn’t even make sense. The logarithm of a single power of 2 is defined only up to a 2×2 theta function, because the logarithm of 2 itself is undefined.
It’s interesting, too, to think about how this relates to the definition of analytic functions. If it’s possible to study all of the functions in a finite way, those that are not also a 2×2 theta function are not analytic functions, and there is no reason to keep them in the same branch of the complex numbers, or anywhere else.
The same argument can be made with the Riemann hypothesis. We can in fact consider a whole mountain of them, but we can’t consider all of them at once.
