The process of setting import settings is pretty straightforward, although some people get confused by the number of possible options for each step. You can set the image’s resolution and color mode for JPEG, TIFF, PSD, EPS, or AI formats. We cover JPEG and TIFF in detail in Chapters 8 and 9, respectively.
Understanding color settings
As covered in Chapter 3, photos are made up of three primary colors that make up the spectrum: red, blue, and yellow. These colors aren’t the same as the traditional RGB color model used in monitors, graphics cards, and printers (refer to Chapter 2). The colors they represent are different from the colors in printers and CRTs, but color them how you like!
As you create an image, Photoshop stores the colors of the original and the resulting copy in a Color Lookup Table (CLUT). The CLUT is an array of numbers that measure the degree to which each color in the image is contained by the overall image. The more the image has been altered, the greater the CLUT.
For example, Figure 6-1 shows a gray area of a photo. The original image has a CLUT of 0.0 or flat. The increased CLUT of this image, in the photo, is 4.9.
Photoshop uses the CLUT to determine whether a color in the image is the original color, and then uses its algorithms to determine a color that is close to the original. For example, the blue in the sky in Figure 6-1 is identical to the blue in the sky in Figure 6-2. However, the CLUT numbers are different.
