Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared Friday that the seven-week Gaza war was finally over, after he sent the army on a predawn raid on dozens of Hamas targets.

Netanyahu made his comments to his cabinet at a late afternoon meeting in Jerusalem. He vowed not to allow terrorists to take the Gaza Strip, but said Israel’s aim was to restore quiet to the area.
Sirens blared in Israel shortly before 3 a.m. as the army carried out ground forces, tanks and aircraft in and around Gaza City.
“Our objective was to create quiet, and there was quiet,” Netanyahu said in a televised address to the nation.
The prime minister said Hamas, which controls Gaza, had “so far failed to fulfill its fundamental obligation to cease fire.”
Israel has lost 50 soldiers and several civilians in the fighting, which began a month ago as a response to the kidnapping and killing of three Israeli teenagers in the West Bank.
Israel pulled out of Gaza in 2005, and said Gaza militants fired more than 13,000 rockets and mortar shells toward Israel.
