Good Way To Build Secure REST Apps

I would like to learn how to build REST apps that are secure and that prevent hacking. I am writing an app where users will need to log in via a username and password.
I have been recommended the use of HTTP Basic Authentication, which is good, however I’m not very knowledgeable about the finer details of securing REST APIs.
My app stores information about the endpoints that are accessible and I need to manage sensitive data. I need to be able to protect my app from attacks, while still enabling the user to access the app.
