i tried playing a few more games in the space between writing this review and publishing it. the experience was generally similar. halo infinite plays perfectly on my windows 10 pc. it plays fine on a similarly configured mac, and it plays fine on my linux system. that said, it only works on windows. you need windows for the game, which is a bit of a shame.
but that doesnt mean the game is completely without redeeming qualities. the graphics are stunning. the level design is fresh and interesting. halo infinite is a good example of how a large game studio can take a tried and tested formula like the halo series and update it to make it more engaging and exciting. theres a certain sense of tension to the game that halo 3 just never had.
in any case, you can pick up a copy of halo 3 for xbox 360 right now and through the xbox live marketplace for $9.99. given that this game runs to 1080p at 60fps, it’s a fantastic deal for a classic. however, halo 3: odst is another story – a $9.99 on xbox live is a ripoff, and considering that this game has a variety of issues that need to be addressed, it’s worth waiting until the free halo: the master chief collection update hits later this year to get a copy.

halo 3 isn’t a bad port by any stretch of the imagination, but it is a port that feels like one of the weaker entries in the collection. it lacks the ambition of the halo reach and odst anniversary editions, but it also lacks any notable improvements to the experience. but, when the competition starts to look that bad – and it does – it is an honour to be a part of the team. this is the best pc port weve released yet, and the only way it could be better is by being the final piece of work on the master chief collection, and then adding in hdr and split-screen to make it the definitive pc halo experience.
the gameplay mechanics are still very much in place, with a few changes that help to take the halo franchise forward. the most obvious addition is the all-new spartan ops campaign. this is a really cool idea and a neat way of adding a bit of multiplayer into the halo universe. the campaign is broken up into the usual missions that you would expect. the missions are all fairly short, with each one taking no longer than an hour to complete. you can only play through the campaign once, so if youre looking to get as much out of halo 3 as possible, this is the way to do it.
youll have to play the campaign solo however, as the single-player story is still not connected to online multiplayer. there is a separate campaign progression system, but its not connected to the multiplayer matchmaking system. your performance and actions in-game will carry over to the multiplayer match, but you cant directly transfer your progress between the two. the result of this is that you can play through the campaign at your leisure, before jumping into multiplayer matches and getting straight into action. this is another nice touch, and is another way to add a little variety to the halo experience.
