the reason the suits are bright is because they are batteries. well, glowing metallic batteries. a simple solution. why not just get rid of the wire webbing and have spider man just shoot his web off his arms from his elbow? oh, that would never work as it really isn’t that kind of superhero. batman flings his cape. robin flies around, trying to keep his head above water. spider man uses energy blasts that actually arc out at ridiculous lengths. spider man, man. spider man. less of a superhero and more of an extra, a bit like the cat on batman the animated series.
and that, basically, is what’s wrong with the amazing spider-man. because from a distance it looks good. the 3d renders look good. we can see all the cool special effects. there’s even less dialogue than the first one, which is always a good thing as the bland, relentless, repetitive characterisation in the films makes them long. and there’s more scenes where the action is managed in the same way as every other action movie: the hero and the bad guy interact with each other and fight each other. but as we get closer, we can see how pointless it all is. the fights are just about as mind-numbingly one-sided as you could imagine. the aformentioned “cornered” scenes where spider-man reveals his spider-sense are as dull and unfunny as they come.
really though, its not the action thats the problem. look at the street scenes. look at the fight scenes where spider man goes on a rampage to make up for his lack of fighting skills. its those scenes where spider man is clinging to building after building, swinging across the city in a cloud of his webbing. these are the defining moments of the trilogy, yet the entire sequence is rendered in a style that defies the laws of physics: the amazing spider man is an exercise in how not to make spider man. the camera is dead, lazy, tracking behind spider man at speed. you just cant swing fast enough to keep up. the amazing spider man 2 does an ok job of it, but there are some serious technical problems. the entire city is rendered in crysis-style blocky, low-resolution vertices. this means that the action looks far better than it should: spider man moves with an incredible frequency, sprinting around in a blur, but it’s all rendered with as wide a smear as can be. it’s utterly impossible to keep up with spider man on the street.
